About Sagaponack Books Pete and Annie

Founded in 1999 as an independent publisher committed to environmental education and publishing excellence, Sagaponack Books encourages children to know and understand the natural world.

Promoting science through literature, each hardcover book is a reliable source of educational material that accurately depicts nature and its corresponding environment.

Author visits to schools, libraries, and organizations encourage children to read and write creatively, build curiosity, and explore ways to benefit our wildlife and environment.

CornucopiaSagaponack Books joined the Green Press Initiative in 2004 and is steadfast to implement policies that support the global preservation of endangered forests and promote accountability within the publishing industry. The books are printed on postconsumer recycled paper, furthering our commitment to protecting the environment and to the responsible use of natural resources.

The primary goal of our partnership with the Green Press Initiative is to join the book industry's utilization of postconsumer recycled fiber increase from an average of 5 percent to 30 percent and to have industry stakeholders work to eliminate endangered forest fibers by July 2008.

The annual ecological benefit of this goal will be: the life of 4.9 million trees; the reduction/prevention of 524 million pounds of greenhouse gases; the saving of 2 billion gallons of water; the reduction/ prevention of 388,137 pounds of hazardous air pollutants; and reduced pressure on rare and threatened forests.

The publishing industry has the potential to make a positive difference in our ecological environment, and like any monumental change, it involves both awareness and action. Let's all do what we can and work together!

About the Founders

Hugh and FrancesHugh and Frances Keiser, husband and wife, illustrator and author, started Sagaponack Books with a dream to help children connect with nature. With the help of Pelican Pete, they now happily contribute to environmental education across the country.

In addition to The Pelican Pete series, the Keisers collaborate on a weekly newspaper column, Pete's interactive website and blog, and articles for various publications. Frequent speaking engagements give them the opportunity to meet with children and families at schools, libraries, and festivals nationwide.

The Keisers live on a barrier island in St. Augustine, Florida, in a house aptly named "Pelican Perch". They enjoy spending time with their eight grandchildren, cats Tina and Sparky, and the cool Atlantic breeze—the same breeze that carries Pete and his pals to their next adventure.

Hugh and Frances with LamasHugh and I met in the late 1970's when we shared a life drawing class at Parsons School of Design in New York City. I was the small-town nature girl from Jersey and Hugh was the big-city architect from New York. He arrived in a business suit and wing tips, carrying a briefcase and I showed up in my jeans and hiking boots, with a day pack slung over my shoulder.

A shared love for art brought us together, but we soon discovered that exploring nature was another common interest. We've been best friends and companions ever since those early days at Parsons, and married for more then 20 years.

In 1990 we retired from the hustle and bustle of city life, sold our home in Sagaponack, New York and moved to sunny Florida. Visions of relaxing on the beach and playing golf changed dramatically when we decided to use our skills to help conservation efforts and wildlife preservation.

Pelican Pete has taken us on a flight filled with adventures, discovery, new friends, hard work, laughter, and rewards. We are busier now than we ever were in our younger days in the big city, and we're having a fantastic time in the process!
